An explosion on the Spanish island of Mallorca has now been confirmed as being caused by one of a series of bombs planted by the Basque terror group ETA. No-one was hurt by the blast which was the first of four in a few hours to hit the holiday island at the weekend. They followed a car-bombing at the end of July which killed two civil guards. Police said the attacks were part of a campaign to prove ETA still has the capability to launch attacks despite recent high-profile arrests of suspected leaders in France and Spain.

Photographs have been released of six people wanted in connection with the explosions. It is thought some of the suspects may still be on Mallorca, and may be planning more attacks. Police are also studying the remains of the timing devices of the latest bombs to see if they were all planted at the same time. The bombings have worried Mallorca’s vital tourist industry. The island attracted more than ten million people last year and an ETA campaign could have serious financial repercussions. For the time being though, holiday firms report no cancellations. Mallorca is also the favoured summer destination of Spain’s Royal Family, and their presence on the island guarantees ETA maximum publicity if it is planning a new terror campaign.More about: Attack, Basque country, ETA
