The Basque separatist group Eta has admitted carrying out a series of recent bombings in Spain, including one in which two Civil Guards died in July.

In a statement sent to the Basque newspaper, Gara, Eta said it was also behind a car bomb attack which killed a police inspector two months ago. Eta claimed the victim was a “despicable torturer”. Eduardo Puelles Garcia was the chief of police operations against independence activists who pressured prisoners into collaborating by threats, Eta said. The two Civil Guards were killed in the Majorcan resort of Palmanova. Diego Salva and Carlos Saenz de Tajeda were in a patrol car when a bomb exploded underneath it. Eta also claimed responsibility for the car bomb which exploded outside a police barracks in Burgos on July 29, injuring 40 people, and an attack on the offices of the governing Socialist Party in the Basque town of Durango on July 10. The Spanish authorities have banned an annual demonstration due to take place in the Basque town of San Sebastian today following clashes between protesters and police.More about: ETA, Spain, Terrorism
