Heavy flooding has provoked numerous casualties in the Philippines and Taiwan.

With rescue workers still in action, the precise death toll has yet to be established, but in one of the worst incidents six tourists drowned after being swept off the Minatubo volcano north west of Manilla. A number of Westerners including at least one French person are believed to be among the victims. Thousand of residents had to be evacuated from the region. The flooding was provoked by a category two typhoon which dumped heavy rains causing a dike to collapse. The typhoon also hit Taiwan, causing air traffic to be cancelled and schools and businesses to shut down for the day.
