Gunman kills gay youngsters in Tel Aviv

A gunman in Israel has killed two people and wounded at least ten others, some of them seriously, after bursting into a youth club for gay teenagers. The assailant, said to have been dressed in black and wearing a mask opened fire with an automatic rifle and afterwards ran from the building.

A police spokesperson on the scene said he believed the incident was most likely a criminal attack and not terrorist based. The shooting prompted a citywide clamp down reviving memories of Palestinian attacks which have declined in recent years. Tel Aviv has an active gay scene, but homosexuality is not tolerated in more conservative, orthodox areas of the state. After the shooting dozens of youngsters and gay supporters held a rally in the street in front of the club and lit candles for the dead. The incident has come as a shock to many, particularly in normally liberal Tel Aviv. Police in the city have warned other similar clubs to close for fear of follow-up attacks,More about: ,
