Morocco marks monarch’s 10th anniversary

It is exactly a decade since Morocco’s King Mohammed VI took to the throne and celebrations are taking place across the country.

Traditional ceremonies as well as parties and concerts are marking the occasion. The national press is full of special editions and glowing tributes. The monarch and his inner circle make Morocco’s key decisions so it was fitting that his anniversary speech sounded rather like that of a politician. “In the last 10 years, Morocco has been able to realise major sustainable development projects,” he said in a televised address. “And I tell you sincerely, it was not an easy undertaking for us. But despite all the difficulties and challenges, I promise you we will continue our efforts for the development of our country.” Today is a bank holiday in Morocco. But on Wednesday, military marching bands and firework displays helped to kick-start the celebrations. Tomorrow, dignitaries from different walks of life will formally swear their allegiance to the 45-year-old sovereign.More about: ,
