“Good progress” that is how the US envoy to the Middle East described talks on reviving the peace process in the region.

George Mitchell is in Jerusalem and held a one-on-one meeting with Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu lasting nearly three hours. The US is pushing for a far reaching plan for peace. “President Obama’s vision is of a comprehensive peace in the Middle East which includes peace between Israel and Palestinians, between Syria and Israel and between Israel and Lebanon and also the full normalisation of relations between Israel and all of its neighbours in the region,” said George Mitchell. But it is not clear yet if any headway was made on one major sticking point – halting Israeli settlement construction. That is one of Washington’s key demands and relations between the two countries have soured over the issue. Though settlers have been out in force in protest at th US there are rumours a compromise could be in the air.
