Tributes have been paid after the death of the man credited by many with revolutionising the visual and performing arts. The famed avant-garde dancer and choreographer Merce Cunningham died at his New York home on Sunday of natural causes, according to a spokesman from his dance company.

In April, the 90-year-old set up a trust to continue the work of his dance company for two years and then preserve his choreography in digital form for future artists and audiences. His career spanned more than 60 years and around 150 works. Cunningham revolutionised dance by wiping out the narrative and even tossing coins or dice to determine his next steps, claiming the use of chance helped free his imagination. He worked closely with composer John Cage, his longtime partner who died in 1992. Visual artists like Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns were also inspired by his work.More about: Dance, USA
