Protests held against Iran leadership

Rallies have been taking place in around eighty cities to protest against the Iranian leadership. In the German capital Berlin hundreds of activists took to the streets angry at the mistreatment of opposition supporters of defeated presidential candidate Mir Hossein Moussavi.

Organisers have called for the release of hundreds of people who have been arrested in Iran, during days of violence after the disputed presidential election. Monika Lueke from Amnesty International said: “During the last 50 days human rights have been violated in Iran. They’ve beaten demonstrators and tourtured people in prisons. There is almost a total information embargo.”

In the Belgium capital Brussels, several hundred protesters gathered outside the Iranian embassy. Authorities in Iran insist most of those arrested have been freed, this is strongly denied by protesters.

On Saturday, Iran’s opposition urged for the release of people still being held after it was reported one protester had died in prison.
