Wildfires have claimed another life in Spain, taking to five the number of firemen killed in the country since Tuesday.

A fire engine driven by the latest victim fell into a ditch during efforts to control flames that have forced 1,500 people to leave their homes in Aragon. Professional fire crews and local reinforcements are battling wildfires on several fronts. In total more than 9,000 hectares of land have been burned. After his neighbours were unable to tackle one fire by themselves, a water tanker was brought in, explained one Aragon resident. “We managed to put it out over the houses, but I think five or six were destroyed.” Spain has appealed for outside help. Portugal replied immediately, saying one of its firefighting aircraft was being sent today. On the ground, makeshift shelters are now home for many. “We resisted as best we could but in the end, we were told it was impossible and that we had to evacuate,” said a man being cared for in a community hall. In Catalonia, funerals have been held for four firefighters killed tackling a blaze earlier this week. Two days after their death, the fire in a national park continues to rage. .More about: Spain
