In Spain, four firefighters have been killed and two seriously injured as they battled forest fires in the northeast of the country.

It is thought they were caught by a sudden change in wind direction which revived the blaze in a mountainous area near Tarragona in Catalonia. Planes dropped water on the fires which so far have ravaged around 800 hectares of pine forest and scrubland. It is the worst tragedy involving forest fires in Spain since 2005, when 11 firefighters were killed as they tackled a blaze near the central city of Guadalajara. Fires have also broken out in several other places in Spain, fuelled by high temperatures and strong winds. In Catalonia, flames are also threatening the hamlet of Horta de Sant Joan, leading to several houses in the area being abandoned.More about: Spain
