EU: “Summer travel will spread swine flu”

The surge in summer holiday traffic is expected to dramatically increase the spread of swine flu across Europe. Millions of us will be heading away over the next few weeks, hugely-increasing rates of infection. Add the expected arrival of normal, seasonal flu in the autumn, and EU health experts are worried.

“The anticipated arrival of seasonal flu in October, November, December, when added to the pandemic, is going to have an important effect on the acceleration of the spread of the virus, and a rise in the numbers of deaths,” warned EU Health Commissioner Androulla Vasiliou. Australia has begun the world’s first human trials of a swine flu vaccine, using adult volunteers in Adelaide. The trials are expected to last about seven months, but initial results may allow supplies to be made generally available from October.More about: , ,
