Suicide bombers attack Afghan cities as Solana visits Kabul

Afghanistan has been hit a wave of deadly attacks prompting the EU Foreign policy chief to admit the security situation is less than ideal.

Javier Solana arrived in the Afghan capital to reassure President Hamid Karzai of Europe’s continued backing ahead of next month’s presidential elections. ‘‘I think that the security situation is evolving not in an ideal manner. There’s an operation going on, difficult to judge but I’m sure when the operation is over we will have a possibility to say that the situation in general, not only the south part, it will be better.’‘ the EU Foreign policy chief said. Solana’s words came with the news that at least nine people had been killed in the eastern cities of Gardez and Jalalabad following a series of strikes by Taliban gunmen and suicide bombers. Several sites, including military posts were reportedly targeted. Meanwhile, British military officials also announced the death of another soldier in Helmand province, the 18th Briton to die in Afghanistan so far this month.
