Known to millions as ‘‘the most trusted man in America’‘, the former US TV news anchor Walter Cronkite has died aged 92.
For nearly 20 years, Americans tuned into ‘CBS Evening News’ to hear world events as reported by Cronkite.
One of the first journalists to follow US forces in World War Two, he covered the assassinations of President Kennedy and Martin Luther King and the resignation of Richard Nixon.
Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1981, in later years Cronkite spent his time writing and exercising his passion for sailing.
His demeanour also inspired the nickname ‘‘Uncle Walter’‘ and when he signed off his newscasts with his catchphrase, ‘‘And that’s the way it is,’‘ few doubted him.
