Tens of thousands of protesters used a sermon by former President Ali Akhbar Hashemi Rafsanjani to stage the biggest show of dissent for weeks. Clashes erupted near Tehran University between police and followers of defeated presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi.

The security forces are reported to have used tear gas and beat demonstrators, many of whom were carrying green banners — Mousavi’s campaign colour. He contests the official result that shows President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad won by a wide margin.
