Nigerian rebels sign up to ceasefire

The Nigerian rebel group Mend has announced a 60-day ceasefire.

The group-The Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta-say the deal was reached after its leader, Henry Okah, was granted a government amnesty from charges, including treason. The announcement comes just days after militants in speedboats attacked the main oil depot serving the capital Lagos. Mend have launched numerous attacks on Niger Deta in recent years, the core of the lucrative Nigerian oil and gas industry. The group says it wants a more equal distribution of the wealth generated from the country’s natural resources. Nigeria’s leaders have previously treated the group as criminals.More about: , ,
