Eight British servicemen mourned by thousands

world news

| |

The bodies of eight British soldiers killed in a single 24 hour-period in Afghanistan have been driven through the streets of Wootton Bassett in southwest England. Thousands lined the route to pay their respects. Three of the men were just 18.

“ We feel it is a matter of pride to represent the country we respect the feelings of everyone associated,” said one man.

The men died in Helmond province where British and US forces are involved in a major operation to take territory from the Taliban. Meanwhile, an Italian soldier has been killed and three others wounded after their convoy was hit by a roadside bomb. Fourteen Italian soldiers have now lost their lives during the conflict in Afghanistan.
