US and UK to stay the course in Afghanistan

Despite mounting losses Washington and London have said they remain committed to defeating the Taliban.

On Sunday, two American soldiers were killed in a roadside bomb in Helmand province. US and British forces have stepped up assaults against the Taliban in recent days as part of a new regional strategy. The US deaths came as the names and faces of six young British soldiers were made public – three were aged 18. The once relative calm of the Afghan conflict has seen a reversal for UK forces, with the number of British soldiers killed in Afghanistan now surpassing that in Iraq. Public support for the troops remains high. But, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has tried to shore up faith in the campaign itself. He said the offensive in Helmand province was succeeding.More about: ,
