Talks are continuing to try to resolve the political crisis in Honduras with a breakthrough still nowhere in sight.

The country’s ousted president and interim head have held separate discussions with Costa Rica’s leader Oscar Arias. But despite the Nobel Peace Prize winner’s efforts at mediation, both parties remain firmly entrenched in their positions. Manuel Zelaya defended his demand to be reinstated, backed, he said, by the Organisation of American States and the UN. Linking this to the re-establishment of the rule of law and democracy, he described himself as the “legitimate Honduran President.” But the man who replaced him after last month’s coup sees things differently. Roberto Micheletti has already left Costa Rica, although dialogue will continue with his representatives. “The topic that we won’t discuss is the return of former President Zelaya – unless he is appearing before the courts,” he said speaking after his return to Honduras. “As I told President Arias, it was not a coup d’etat. It was a constitutional succession.” The showdown meanwhile is continuing on the streets of Hunduras with supporters and opponents of the ousted leader making their voices heard.More about: Coup, Honduras
