As expected, the G8 summit in Italy has led to an announcement on funding for agricultural sustainability and food security in developing countries.

However, what was NOT expected was the amount = 14 billion euros over three years, thats four billion more than expected. “Finally, we have committed to investing 20 billion dollars in food security, agricultural development programs to help fight world hunger. This is in addition to the emergency humanitarian aid that we provide. I just want to note that going into the meeting we had agreed to 15 billion, we exceeded that mark and obtained additional five billion dollars of our committments.” Several African leaders had travelled to Italy to put their case for funding. The G8 also committed to ensuring adequate emergency food aid and called on all countries to remove food export restrictions and unnecessary taxes.More about: , ,
