Iraq has witnessed its deadliest attacks since last week’s withdrawal of US troops from the country’s towns and cities. More than 40 people have died.

Two suicide bomb attacks in the northern town of Tal Afar killed at least 34 people and injured more than 60. The town is mainly home to minority Turkmen. Later in Baghdad seven people were killed and 20 wounded by two blasts in a market in Sadr City, a poor, Shia Muslim area. The bombs had reportedly been hidden among piles of rubbish and went off one after the other. The wounded were taken to hospital, the victims said to include women and children. In a third attack the governor of the Iraqi Central Bank escaped unhurt when a bomb went off next to his convoy. One civilian was killed and five people injured. The bombs are a challenge to Iraqi security forces, now responsible for town centres following the withdrawal of US troops to outlying areas.More about: Attack, Iraq
