Arrests made as G8 protests start

Italian police say 38 people have been arrested during clashes at protests in Rome against the Group of Eight summit.

At one demonstration, protestors with covered faces blocked roads and set fire to rubbish bins and tyres near one of the capital’s universities.

Eleven of those arrested have been detained on various charges. They include nationals from France, Poland and Germany.

As the day drew on, demonstrators blocked tracks at Rome’s main train station, hurling stones at police in riot gear.

Numerous protests have been planned for Rome and L’Aquila.

The largest demonstration of the week is planned for L’Aquila this Friday. Anti-globalisation groups have also vowed to hold impromptu protests across Italy.
