Italian town in shock after fiery derailment

Officials in Viareggio say the deadly accident happened when one carriage derailed, pulling another four with it. Liquefied petroleum gas escaped from a tank on one of the carriages and caught fire.

Viareggio Mayor Luca Lunardini said: “Thanks to the quick arrival of firefighters and rescuers, we were able to limit the damage, even if the damage we have suffered is a tragedy.” About a thousand people were evacuated from their homes just after the explosions around midnight. At least two children are reported to be among those killed.More about: , ,
