Dance world mourns passing of Bausch

One of the most important figures in contemporary dance Pina Bausch has died suddenly of cancer. She was 68.

She began dancing aged 14 in the beating heart of German dance-theatre, Essen, and after three years in New York as a teenager by the start of the 1970s was running Essen’s dance output. Then in 1973 she joined the Wuppertal arts centre and finally abandons the conventions of dance to produce experimental new forms of dance-theatre, all but creating the genre, and takes it to a national, then international audience. She appeared in films by Fellini and Almodovar, and for the last 15 years had been exploring some of the world’s great cities through dance.More about: , ,
