Iran’s relations with the US and especially the UK are worsening.

As another opposition protest got underway, Iran was accusing both nations of fanning internal unrest. Iran’s intelligence minister Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejei denied there was vote rigging in the recent Presidential poll and he accused Britain in particular of using agents to destabilise Iran. The diplomatic crisis worsened yesterday when a meeting of EU ministers in Corfu heard local staff working for the British embassy in Teheran had been arrested on the grounds of stirring up the protest movement. EU ministers warned Iran it would face a collective response over the detentions. The acting EU presidency spokesman Jan Kohout said: “The EU calls on Iran and its authorities to stop hostilities against EU member states as well as the EU’s partner countries and their citizens and to release EU journalists still in custody.” Relations between Iran and the UK – which historically have always been something of a roller coaster ride – have not sunk so low since the row over Salman Rushdie’s Satanic Verses book twenty years ago.More about:
