Iranian opposition rejects vote recount

Iran’s defeated opposition leader has rejected the idea of a partial recount of presidential election votes, and demanded a new ballot. Mir Hossein Mousavi continues to insist he won June 12th’s disputed election, despite President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad being confirmed as the winner.

Iran’s Guardian Council had offered to recount ten per cent of the votes, but Mousavi’s camp claims vote-rigging, and says a partial recount is meaningless.

Protests continue at home and abroad, with about a thousand exiles in Frankfurt denouncing what they called the fascist regime in Tehran. But the establishment there has made it clear there is no chance of a new election, and a hardline cleric has demanded the execution of what he labelled as ‘rioters’ leading the demonstrations inside the Islamic Republic.
