UVF disarms, UDA says “struggle over”

The Ulster Volunteer Force, which has claimed 550 mostly Catholic victims in Northern Ireland, says it has totally disarmed.

The other major pro-British paramilitary group the Ulster Defence Association, which killed 431 people, says it has partially disarmed in a joint decommissioning operation overseen by General John de Chastelaine. It added it sees no reason to continue armed conflict. It may bring the day closer when the only reminder of a violent 30 years will be tourist trails of Belfast protest murals, and it is being hailed as a milestone in the peace process.
