There are conflicting reports of renewed violence in Iran. The latest images from Tehran appear to show people gathering for a demonstration against the recent presidential election, which they say was rigged.

One report said police had moved in to break up the protest, but another witness account said there had been no clashes. Because of heavy reporting restrictions, the images and information coming out of Iran are very difficult to independently verify. Earlier, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamanei said he would not give in to protests and called for the election victory of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to be respected. State TV has also said a partial recount reinforced the result. Tehran had been reported calm this morning. A security crackdown appeared to be taking effect. But opposition leaders have called for three days of mourning for the estimated 17 people who have died so far in the unrest, and further protests had been expected.More about: Iran, Protest
