The result of Iran’s disputed June 12 presidential election is to stand. The country’s top legislative body, the Guardian Council, has ruled out any annulment and, according to Iran’s English language Press TV, it reports there have been no major polling irregularities.

With the earlier statement from the hardline Revolutionary Guard signalling a crackdown on any fresh unrest, it is difficult to anticipate the opposition’s next move. The official swearing-in of the returned president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has been scheduled to take place sometime between July 26 and mid August. Despite a banning of foreign press coverage of the protests , amateur footage continues to surface on the internet. Video from last night showed security police breaking up a motorised demonstration. Tension between Iran and the West continues with some embassy staff and their families being recalled home.
