Confusion over Air France black box signals

As the search continues for bodies and wreckage from the Air France crash there is confusion over whether the black boxes have been located.

A French news website says signals from the flight information recorders have been detected and that a mini-submarine was trying to pinpoint the location.

But France’s air accident authority says many sounds have been picked up from the sea bed and investigators were not sure they were coming from the boxes. A spokesperson said it was not the first time suspected signals had been heard.

Locator beacons, known as “pingers”, on the flight recorders send an electronic impulse every second for at least 30 days.

228 people died when the Airbus aircraft plunged into to the Atlantic while en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris on June 1.
