Protest rally in Tehran broken up

A rally in Tehran to commemorate protesters who died in unrest at the weekend has reportedly been broken up by security forces firing teargas and shots in the air.

Around 1,000 opposition supporters were said to have gathered in a central square in Tehran, despite a warning of a crackdown from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. The protests are against what the opposition claim was a rigged presidential election. The warning of a tough response came in a website linked to the Revolutionary Guard, which up to now had not intervened. Iranian leaders have blamed the West for stoking unrest. With an extensive military response looking more likely Italy has said it would be willing to open its embassy to injured protesters.More about: ,
