Moscow International Film Festival Opens

The Moscow International Film Festival opened this weekend at the Pushkinsky cinema to the delight of many. The stars were out in force, promoting the 16 movies which will compete for the main prize, the Golden St George. Films have been entered from Bulgaria, Hungary, Iran, Japan, the US, Poland,and the Ukraine as well as Russia.

Adrian Brody braved the rain to make an appearance on the green carpet. He is a special guest at the festival in Moscow to show his new film Cadillac Records.

Pavel Lungin’s film “Tsar” – premiered at Cannes last month – tells the story of Ivan the Terrible and according to the director is aimed at closing the gap between the Russian art house movies which so often show at Russian cinemas and the action packed thrillers which Russian audiences hunger to see.

Sci-fi outing “Uninhabited Island” cost a whopping 30 million euros to make – and was released earlier this year. A joy-rider in space gets stranded on a planet ruled by a hard-line government which is prepared to attack and crush any note of protest or dissent.
