There are fears of more violence on the streets of Iran after yesterday’s running battles between Iranian security forces and demonstrators. Journalists are banned by the regime from reporting from the streets of Tehran, so most of the footage we are seeing is raw, unverifiable film, taken mainly from internet social networking sites.
The scale of injuries, deaths or arrests is unclear. What is certain Iran is witnessing the biggest protests since the revolution of 1979 which ousted the Shah. Opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi says the Islamic Republic must be purged of what he calls “lies and dishonesty” – this sends a direct challenge to the conservative leadership.
Iran appears to be heading into unchartered territory – all the world can do is watch.
