Images of Saturday’s clashes in Tehran appear to justify claims that it was the bloodiest day in more than a week of unprecedented popular unrest. Iranian authorities say at least ten people were killed with more than 100 others injured and have blamed what they call “terrorists” and rioters. State television has shown pictures of people attacking security forces or suspected members of the Bisij militia.

Riot police deployed in large numbers used batons, teargas and water canons to disperse massive crowds that gathered across the city. Dozens of people are said to have been arrested. Among those detained was the daughter of former President Rafsajani, along with four other relatives for what state media described as “alleged involvement in post election incidents.”
