A record number of people are going without food, according to a new report.

More than a billion people – one in six of everyone on earth – are hungry. It is the combined result of the global economic crisis and high food prices, but the biggest problem is food distribution. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation says almost all of the world’s undernourished live in developing countries. The FAO’s Kostas Stamoulis said: “We can eliminate hunger in the world, we have the resources: the food is there. It’s not lack of food. This year we have almost the record crop globally so it’s not lack of food, it’s lack of access to food by those that are hungry.” Soaring prices for staples, such as rice, triggered riots in many developing world countries last year. Despite strong cereal production this year, average prices remain 24 percent higher in real terms than in 2006.More about: ,
