Tributes are being paid to a Catalan philanthopist, known as Spain’s Mother Teresa, who has died at the age of 89.

Since arriving in Mumbai in 1952, Vicente Ferrer had devoted his life to helping some two million poor. The former Jesuit died in India of respiratory problems surrounded by his family and members of the foundation he created. Ferrer’s pragmatic approach was not always popular with authorities. Ferrer leaves a wife, British journalist Anna Perry, and three children who have vowed to maintain his foundation, which runs schools, hospitals and orphanages.More about: , ,
