Since arriving in Mumbai in 1952, Vicente Ferrer had devoted his life to helping some two million poor. The former Jesuit died in India of respiratory problems surrounded by his family and members of the foundation he created. Ferrer’s pragmatic approach was not always popular with authorities. He was expelled from the Jesuits and even thrown out of India briefly in the Sixties. But in 1998 he was awarded Spain’s most prestigious Prince of Asturias prize for his humanitarian work. Ferrer leaves a wife, British journalist Anna Perry, and three children who have vowed to maintain his foundation, which runs schools, hospitals and orphanages.More about: Human Rights, India, SpainCopyright © 2012 euronews
