Graciela Iturbide and Julio Pomar retrospectives

Mexican phtographer Graciela Iturbide is showing a major retrospective of her work, entitled “Dreams and Death” as part of the “PhotoEspagna 2009” event in Madrid. Her work is deeply influenced by the death of her 6-year old daughter in 1970 and often focuses on “little angels”. (The corpses of children are customarily dressed as angels in Mexico.)

The exhibition is at the Fundación Mapfre in Madrid and runs until 6th September.

Portuguese surrealist Júlio Pomar is also exhibiting a major retrospective, this time at the Manuel de Brito Contemporary Art Centre in Lisbon.

The show includes around 100 paintings, drawings, engravings, seriographs and collages selected from six decades of work. Julio Pomar is considered something of a benchmark in the artistic world. The themes that engage him include bull-fighting, neorealism, horse-racing, May 68, and the indiginous people of Brazil. The show includes a portrait of Frida Kahlo.

The exhibition runs until 11th September.
