Climate change accelerating

In the Alps of Cervinia in Northern Italy, as a result of global warming temperatures are rising faster than anywhere else in Europe. The Alps started to thaw in 2003 and since then, the melt has accelerated.

This May was the hottest in 250 years, and the permafrost is now melting which means that Italy is having to redefine its borders with Switzerland, France and Austria. Worse, the limestone has become porous, and this causes landslides. Soon it will cause water shortages in the region and the skiing industry stands to be badly affected too.

Climate change is also affecting cities all over the world. A new book “Adapting Cities to Climate Change” published by the UK-based “International Institute for Environment and Development contains articles from around 40 environmental specialists and states that hundreds of millions of people are at risk of disasters caused by climate change.
