Tens of thousands of people are protesting for the fifth day running against the disputed election victory of Iran’s hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Supporters of the defeated reformist candidate Mirhossein Mousavi are defying warnings by the Interior Ministry to stay off the streets of Tehran and other cities across the country. Mousavi has called for a day of mourning tomorrow for those killed in bloody street battles. Up to eight people are believed to have died in clashes since Friday’s poll, with many more wounded. Todays protests in Tehran and Isfahan come despite reminders from the authorities that under the Islamic penal code the disruption of domestic security could carry a death sentence. Foreign reporters and camera crews are working under severe restrictions. The majority of footage coming out of the country is being shot on mobile phones by demonstrators. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to take to the streets again tomorrow. Mousavi is urging his supporters to stage peaceful protests or gather in mosques amid the worst unrest seen in Iran since the 1979 Islamic revolution.More about: Iran, Protest
