An anti-terrorist policeman has been shot dead by three gunmen as he was guarding a witness in Athens. The man was shot several times at close range and died in his car.

The 41-year-old father of one had just taken over a shift guarding a witness testifying in a case against the urban guerrilla group Revolutionary Struggle.

The attack bears similarities to another shooting in January claimed by the armed militant group. In that incident, a policeman survived.

A manhunt has been launched to find the attackers who fled on motorbikes. It is the latest in a wave of assaults against the police, political and business targets in Greece since a teenager was shot dead by a policeman in Athens in December, sparking Greece’s worst riots in decades.

The Revolutionary Struggle, which has been active on-and-off since 1974, is on the European Union’s list of terrorist organisations.
