Police forces from two European countries have smashed what they are calling a major drugs cartel. Officers from Belgium and the Netherlands arrested 20 people along the border between the two countries. They raided luxury villas, and found cocaine from South America, which is thought to have come into Europe through the Belgian port of Antwerp, as well as expensive cars and motorcycles. The three-year operation also saw arrests in Britain, Germany and Dubai.

“It was a huge criminal organisation,” Said Dutch Chief Prosecutor Bart Nieuwenhuizen. “Unlike many similar cartels, this gang controlled the entire chain. They produced synthetic drugs, the transport operation and supplying the market.” Police also found ecstasy, amphetamines and marijuana, worth around 50 million euros. Much of the drugs are thought to have been destined for Britain. Senior officers paid tribute to undercover agents who infiltrated the gang, saying normal police work would never have broken up the organisation.More about: Belgium, Netherlands
