Internet blocked in Iran’s post-election chaos

Internet access has been blocked for Iran’s large community of web surfers. The government has restricted access to certain internet addresses in the wake of the widespread protests following the country’s election. Attempts to view many sites have been thwarted – particularly those carrying details of the violent demonstrations.

But even some popular social networking sites are unavailable.

“The government thinks that by blocking websites and cutting off mobile phone networks, they can prevent protests and clashes that have erupted across Iran these past few days. The aim is to cut off people’s communication, not knowing that if people want they can reach their goals without these means.” said one Mousavi supporter.

Mobile phone use has also been restricted, particularly text messaging. Television stations and newspapers have been censored, while journalists allowed into Iran to cover the elections have not had their visas renewed.
