US President Barack Obama says he is deeply troubled by the post-election violence in Iran. After talks with Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi in Washington, Obama told reporters that democratic rights should be protected:

“I am deeply troubled by the violence that I’ve been seeing on the television. I think that the democratic process, free speech, the ability of people of peacefully dissent – all those are universal values and need to be respected” Meeting in Luxembourg, EU Foreign Ministers also urged the Iranian government to agree to an investigation into President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad’s landslide victory: “We view the implications of recent events in Iran with serious concern. The very serious doubts that have been raised about the free and fair nature of the election counting process are obviously of major concern to many people in Iran” said Britain’s David Milliband. Britain, Germany and the UK led the EU campaign to persuade Iran to clarify the election result. The British Foreign Minister also made clear that doubts over the election result could have an impact on talks on Iran’s nuclear programme.More about: European Union, Iran, USA
