Latvia slashes public spending

Latvia has made tough budget cuts of 720 million euros for this year to prevent the Baltic state going bankrupt.

The measures were a condition for a European Union and International Monetary Fund rescue package. Old age pensions will be cut by 10 percent and state sector salaries by 20 percent. Latvia has suffered an almost 20 percent fall in economic growth.More about: ,
