There has been a nail-biting end to Iran’s much-anticipated presidential election. Authorities had to extend the voting numerous times because of the huge numbers wanting to vote.

They say turnout is expected to be as high as 70 percent for this contest, which could go against incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He said: “I am sure that people’s participation will open the way for bigger projects and a brighter future for Iran.” The highest election turnout in Iran was in 1997 when reformist Mohammad Khatami swept to power. Ahjmadinejad’s main challenger, Mirhossein Mousavi, another leading reformer, is hoping a high turnout will work in his favour. He said: “I’ve promised the people to keep their votes secure. My team and I will stay awake until the end of voting, and we demand the election bosses to keep the votes safe.” Some experts believe it is possible that Mousavi could defeat Ahmadinejad, who is seeking a second four-year term.
