The bitter presidential election campaign in Iran has ended after weeks of acrimony between the two main rivals. The election pits current President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad against his most serious challenger Mir Hossein Mousavi. It is Iran’s most hotly-contested election in years, with the bitterness often spreading to supporters.

Ending his campaign with a 20-minute appearance on television, Ahamdinejad didn’t miss the opportunity to get in one last punch. He defended himself as a servant of the people and accused his opponents of being liars. The build up to the election has also been dominated by mass rallies between the rival supporters in Tehran. Refusing to appear on tv with his rival, Mousavi spent his last day on the campaign trail in the capital. He has accused Ahmadinejad of botching the economy and plunging Iran into isolation with the rest of the world. Friday’s result is expected to be tight leading to the possibility of a second round if no clear winner emerges.More about: Iran
