A least 16 people, including two UN workers, have been killed after a large bomb attack in Pakistan.
The blast happened at the Pearl Continental Hotel, a popular destination for foreigners, in the northwestern city Peshawar near the Afghan border. Around seventy people were wounded by the explosion. Militants broke through the hotel’s tight security with guns and a truck bomb. Pakistan’s recent crackdown against the Taliban in the Swat Valley has provoked warnings of revenge attacks. The scene around the hotel last night was one of chaos as emergency service tried to cope with victims. Police say the bomb contained 500 kilos of explosives, a similar size to a suicide truck bomb that killed 55 people at the Marriot Hotel in Islamabad last September.
