The Christian Democrats and the Bavarian Christian Democrats are celebrating having jointly won 38% of the vote to elect a new European Parliament maintaining their leading role in Brussels.

The Social Democrats caught up slightly with 21.5%, the FDP (liberals) came third with 12%, the greens 10.5%, the extreme left polled 7%, and independents and small other parties between them accounted for 11%. Turnout was 42% which was the lowest ever recorded in Germany.More about: ,
