Europe decides in parliamentary poll

European Parliamentary elections culminate today as the final 19 of the European Union’s 27 countries go to the polls. By tonight the political make-up of the 736-member assembly will be known. Although centrist parties are expected to remain the dominant forces, some far-right parties could make gains if the turnout is particularly low.

Pre election opinion polls suggested fewer than half of the 375 million electorate would vote. The UK and Ireland are among the countries which have already voted – results there are likely to impact on domestic political issues. Others such as France voting today, hope a good showing by ruling parties will be evidence of government support. First results will be released at 21.00 CETMore about:
