It’s the final day of voting in Europe, where citizens are being called to elect their representatives in the new European parliament.

Voting started early with people in Britain and the Netherlands already casting their ballots on Thursday. Eight countries have now voted or starting voting, with the big majority doing so today. In some countries, voting has been spread over two days as it coincides with local elections and in an attempt to draw voters to the polls, as surveys predict a record low turnout Europe-wide. Results won’t be released until the last polling stations close, at 10 pm CET tonight in Italy and Poland. The European parliament is currently made up of 785 deputies, a figure that will drop to 736 in the next executive. With 99 elected representatives, Germany has the largest number of seats. Malta has the smallest with five. Another 15 seats will be allocated if and when the Lisbon Treaty comes into force.
