Obama in France for D-Day anniversary

US President Barack Obama has been holding a joint press conference with French President Nicolas Sarkozy ahead of a ceremony to mark the 65th anniversary of D-Day.

The two leaders touched on several matters of international concern including Iran’s nuclear ambitions and what President Obama described as North Korea’s provocative action in carrying out nuclear and ballistic missile tests. President Obama said: “It’s wonderful to be back in France particularly on this day. Because this day marks not only the triumph of freedom but it also marks how the transatlantic alliance has allowed for extraordinary prosperity and security on both sides of the Atlantic.” President Sarkozy praised the American leader’s initiative in Cairo when he offered the hand of friendship to the Muslim world. Later Mr Obama will speak at the American cemetery in Coleville Sur Mer overlooking Omaha beach, scene of fierce fighting on 6 June 1944.
